I met this gentleman in Palestine Tx. one day,as I had stopped in the downtown district to peruse the local antique shops for fourstringers, and when I asked the clerk about banjos,he said"You are standing right next to the BanjoMan"
I looked over and the man said over a furled brow "Five string, right?" I said "nope,Tenors."
He looked at me , fakes a heart attack and said"GLORIA ANN! (His banjo playing wife) this guy is a tenor banjo lover!"
They invited me over, and we looked at all 20 or so of his banjo collection, talked banjo and
our friendship began.
Now I try to stop in every two weeks for my"Lessons",since he cant stand it that Im not a player per se,and he's making some progress in my tutoring!
Burke plays a very fine rhythm banjo, with Gloria playing the lead, and they play on the train that runs thru town, and on the local radio,at the rest home and other things,to keep busy.
After I restore a banjo,I always take it to Burke, and he thrashes it for quality control. There are many subtle touches,as all you players know,in the setup, and Burke has taught me many of those tips,to make the instrument "Player friendly"
The banjos of the Murdock's playing pref's would be the OME tenor.
Gloria's
Gloria's is a bit older than Burkes, and together, they make you feel right at "OME"!!
