Initial pics

Rebuild heel
Turn missing fingerboard area into frailing scoop

You could say this fingerboard is well played.
Old repair where finger nail (Claw) dug it all the way thru I guess!
I will not ruin that look, I will seal all the frets and level them, oil the fingerboard.

Tuners AOK, Grover Champions
Kick out of peghead, thats patina and it stays
I will clean this neck and overspray it with 2 protective clear coats, then steel wool it back to satin

Nice old style 5th peg ramp.

I will glue it up, reset the dowel, and cross dowel it all with hardwood doweling
It will be fine

I sided the buggered edge of the board with ivroid where the frailing scoop will be
it photos as bright white but its yellowish
I used it to look like it was a plain old fix, with what was available and Celluloid binding was in use at that time
Im not going for perfection, just neat and playable.

Dowels are in at an angle to catch main dowel tenon

Assembly

Original skin will stay, its nice and tite with some adjustment left
These heads pull way down by design.

Frets leveled and polished, scoop and Rosewood Fboard oiled and polished

Dyed the Mahogany to mimic rosewood on the scoop.

I will brass wool these bolt heads, and tung oil the rim inside, no finish

The neck attachment was long gone, and it had 3 screws hold it on.
I reused them, but made a faceplate so i could shim the dowel tightly in its notch, and keep them packed tite with the coverplate.
It is as good a junction as you can get with these thin spunover's, Im happy with the action and retention.

Wooled and oiled, then buffed
All hardware was brushed to remove scale, and rim was polished

SETUP

Geared 5th peg
I will probably paint the button black
Chris Sands Classical Heavy Nylon Strings, with a silk wound 4th.

Price Straight line tailpiece, to add downforce for the setup I chose.
I brushed it and took some plating off, to distress it somewhat.
And I l like the look on this banjo, its a wide neck, and the tailpiece suits it.

Grover 3 foot ebony insert bridge.

Vintage hangar bolt

Action is Very good on 1/2, could go to 9/16 if you want it higher

Good playable instrument now, with a rich warm tone.
It would be a good one to have around for quiet playing in the house.
Thanks for watching.
