Project- 5 string
This is a project made from a modern 11" block rim that was made by a luthier years ago, in the style of a Weymann megaphonic style (circa 1920s)
It came unfinished and was a prototype for 14" of the same design.
It was a nice effort considering it was never to have been finished.
It was bolted to a nicely figured neck, that is wood inlaid and had a finish on it already.
I got started and disassembled it all before thinking of pics so I will start with the rim.
It has a flathead style tone ring lathed into it with a nice bearing edge.
I will open up the hook holes to a larger diameter both top and bottom.
Then I will add finish to it, a vintage amber/golden brown.
I will do a tint coat and 3 clear coats of mohawk nitro.
I just want to make a nice looking player from what parts it came with and a few more I have.
It came with a vintage grooved hoop and import hooks and nuts which I will use.
Also in the parts that came along was an armrest shaped like a Weymann on the top so I modified it to work on this banjo.
I will add a downforce tailpiece and for now, Grover Champion friction pegs and a geared 5th.
The neck will be attached with heavy lag bolts and nuts, no rods.

The lathe work is good.

It will take 1/4" nuts.

Dye for the bottom, faux laminate.

Starting the tint, that is the neck behind it,

Armrest done, downforce tailpiece.

It is a nice neck, whoever made it.

Settling in, nice clear warm tone.

Taking out wood from all holes.

Now they can accept a common tension wrench.

Washers for the hooks like Weymann,.

Head adjusted, tuned to pitch.

Grover Champion pegs and a geared 5th.

I had a small uke tuner button I used on the 5th.

I will be dialing it in, doing things as time allows to make it nice, but even in the first setup it shows good promise.
FINAL PICS
